TOMATOMANIA HITS FIG EARTH SUPPLY THIS WEEKEND!

We're thrilled to host our 3rd annual Tomatomania tomato plant sale here at Fig Earth Supply this weekend. We'll have over 75 different varieties of heirloom, open-pollinated and classic tomato varieties in all shapes, size and colors for your summer garden- we're talking black, green, orange, yellow, "blue", striped, mottled, tie-dyed and oh yes of course- red, too!

We'll also have traditional and unique herbs, berries and fruit trees, and a wonderful preview of the season's peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and zucchinis. Don't forget trellises, tomato cages, garden tools and some next level soil amendments for your garden, such as humic acid, crab meal Azomite and of course EB Stone Organics blend 420. We'll even have vegan fertilizer for those of you who requested it.

Joanna Glovinsky is the fruit tree expert for the artist collaboration known asFallen Fruit.  She plants, tends and maps fruit trees in public spaces throughout Los Angeles. Joanna will give a hands-on step by step demonstration on how to plant a your new trees, and also talk about pruning, fertilization and care for stone fruit trees. This workshop is Free.

Fruit tree care workshop #1 'Backyard Orcharding' 
Sunday 12/3,10:00am


This workshop will take place at a home a few minutes away from Fig Earth Supply and will focus on citrus and fig tree care with a sprinkle of apples and peaches. There are many fruit tree species located on this property and most are planted close together so as we learn about citrus and figs, we are also going become experts in backyard orcharding, also known as high density planting. In this workshop, you will learn:

  • High density planting

    • The difference between planting trees too close together vs. high density planting

    • How do you maintain high density plantings?

    • Basic pruning techniques

  • Citrus tree care

    • The basics of citrus tree care

    • What do citrus need to be happy, healthy and produce their best fruit

    • How to prune your citrus trees

  • Fig tree care

    • The basics of fig tree care

    • What figs need to be happy, healthy and produce their best fruit

    • How to prune your fig trees

  • How to prune an apple tree

We will meet at Fig Earth Supply and then take a short ride to the residential orchard where the workshop will be held. Please note, this workshop is not suitable for young children. Come prepared with closed toed shoes, long sleeves and glasses or protective eyewear (citrus can be thorny). 



Fruit tree care workshop #2 – The art of pruning
Saturday 12/9,10:00am

 

This workshop will take place at a residential orchard close by Fig Earth Supply and will focus on stone fruit and pomegranate tree pruning and care. Both species present a wonderful opportunity to learn the fundamentals of pruning fruit trees. In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Pruning fundamentals

    • when and why to prune your trees

    • proper tools and tool care

    • pruning cuts

  • Pomegranate tree care

    • growing habits

    • what pomegranate trees need to be healthy, happy and produce their best fruit

    • how to prune a pomegranate

  • Stone fruit tree care

    • growing habits of stone fruit, in particular peaches, plums and apricots

    • what stone fruit trees need to be healthy, happy and produce their best fruit

    • how to prune peaches, plums and apricot trees

Romanesco Broccoli

One of the oldest known leaf vegetable consumed by humans, watercress is chock-full of good things for your body. We're talking rich in vitamins A, B6, C, and K, riboflavin, calcium, manganese, and folate all the while being low in carbs, protein, and dietary fiber.

Holy Basil

Considered a sacred plant in Indian culture, this variety of basil makes the best purifying, anti-stress tea and infusion. It's supposedly also good for getting rid of mosquitoes.

German chamomile

Another plant for your teacup! Chamomile is used for it's calming and soothing properties. The beautiful white and yellow flowers are beautiful for the garden, too.

zinnias add a dramatic display in a garden. They are edible, along with everything else we have at the nursery, and are a beneficial plant for your vegetables, attracting good insects to help your garden out.
